Soldier

Nanette Donney

Death surrounds you constantly;
it being a part of the job.
Your company sent into battle,
midst a hungry and restless mob.
What are you thinking soldier,
as you patrol the towns?
Do you approach corners warily,
and wonder what's around?
Your parents and families miss you.
Your wives and girlfriends fret.
Because you are so far away,
your fate unknown as yet.
Will you return dear soldier,
and be the countries pride?
Or will you be quickly forgotten;
pain and memories, yours to hide.
Come on home dear soldier,
and play the hero once more.
Stand up and be counted,
for this stupid and wasteful war.
